What is the best way to bring money to China?
I'm traveling to China for a month and a half. I don't want to carry all my money with me of course... How should I make sure I have funds available to me at all times? I have a Canadian Visa Card and bank cards, Can I use them to withdraw RMB in china? And at what transaction costs? What is the cheapest way to go about this? I have never traveled before...Thanks

You can use ATM machine. Of course, there could be a service charge for that

I live and work in China but some friends recently came and brought with them Cash and Travelers checks then used their Credit Cards for the Hotel, Meals and souvenirs (when possible). They were also able to take cash out at ATM's and Bank's but said later is was very, very costly. If your going to a remote part then definitely more cash to be on the safe side. If using your credit card, tell them your going to China and also check the pin to make sure you can withdraw money. If you haven't before, take out $10...as a test.

Depends where you are going. In the more rural areas travellers checks have never been seen, even the banks won't change them. Atm cards work, as long as they have the visa symbol on them. The service charge is around $5 per withdrawl. Surprisingly they don't take much of your money for the exchange rate (this could be different depending on your bank in America, but usually not too bad) What I always did was have $200USD in my money belt at all times, just in case. $100USD cash in wallet, that is exchanged at the bank when first arrive (you will need to present your passport for all money exchanges in the bank) And as long as you're in a larger city travellers checks work fine. So a month and a half, staying in hotels, plus food. Bring like $1,000US in travelers checks, use those whenever possible in the city. If you run out of money, then use your ATM card for withdrawl of 1500RMB or so each time to reduce your withdrawl fee. Only use safe deposit boxes in larger hotels. And make sure to carry a money belt with your passport and travelers checks and any cash over 1,000RMB. If you need to make a bigger purchase just go to the bathroom first and get into a locked stall to move money from your money belt to your wallet. Good luck, common sense saftey measures are the best preventative.
