Why are we paying people from china to do our manufacturing jobs instead of using our Mexican neighbors?
In my opinion I think were just making china stronger and more powerful because the money they make stays there. If our neighbors from Mexico do the work than it would be cheap labor and most likely work its way back to the U.S. economy. What do you think? Greg N i guess you have a valid point but lets be fair here. How many times have products been called back for lead poisoning? Also we have a better relationship with mexico than China. mexicans arent trying to kill us.

I think we should keep our industry here, actually. It would be much better for the environment, too, since our environmental regulations are stricter.

I think the Chinese must be able to be more efficient in creating an acceptable product than Mexico is in many cases. It's economics. If John wants to purchase a printer, and he's looking at two different printers that are similar but one costs less, he buys the one that costs less. If that printer happens to be made in China, and the other one is made in Mexico, then this means that Mexico needs to figure out how to make the same quality printer at a lower cost so it may be offered at a lower price. I would like to see Mexico do better also. There would be numerous benefits to that. China may appear strong and powerful, and in many ways they are, but China still has critical problems. The majority of China is still rural, and it's only a small portion of China that enjoys the benefits of free market values. There are benefits to having China as a major trade partner as well. Not only does it help support positive relations between the two countries which causes China to be an ally in some cases, but it also makes China somewhat dependent on us. When our recession began to hit, China suffered as well because we were buying less goods in general, which means we were buying less from China.

Messicons aren't neighbors. They're invaders.

Because it is cheap labor, companys dont want to pay for sh!t so they make crap in china and sell it here. Do you know why they make so much money? because everything from china has a short lifespan. while if something was made in any other country it would last 100 times more. and I agree with you, we are making china stronger, hell they probably own the U.S. with so much money we had to borrow from them.

It's a combination of factors. Cheap labor, the blue collar chinese get paid less. $6,000 gdp for China and $14,200 gdp for Mexico. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/CH.html https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/MX.html China also has a much larger population from which they can draw workers. Migrant workers from central China travel to the coastal areas to obtain jobs. Infrastructure - China has developed efficient factories, roadways and ports to deliver products. Education and technology - China produces a broad range of products from textiles, consumer products, as well as space launch vehicles and satellites. Their culture has a strong value in education which assists in increasing efficiency within their manufacturing base. I don't believe Mexico can compete. China has both cheap labor and high tech factories. It is not only China. Many asian countries such as South Korea, Vietnam, Phillipines have increased their manufacturing base due to a global economy. You are right that somehow providing more jobs to Mexico would provide a return to the US. Based on the CIA factbook, Mexico has the following percentage of imports. US 49.6%, China 10.5%, Japan 5.8%, South Korea 4.5% (2007 The global economy is dictated by what consumers wish to buy. US consumers like you and I have made decisions based on our pocketbook. Do you want to spend $40 dollars on a pair of shoes made in China or do you want to spend $60 for the same quality of shoes made elsewhere? I think it is inevitable that the manufacturing base is leaving the US due to the much lower wages around the world. Some manufacturing jobs are left Taiwan to go to China while others are leaving China to go to cheaper places like Vietnam. These lower prices for consumer goods are good for the US consumer. The key is for Americans to keep up their wages while enjoying lower priced consumer goods. In regards to China getting stronger, it is just a matter of time. If you know eastern history, China has historically been a major regional power and with their cultural focus on education and strong work ethic, they will be again. They are already a nuclear power, have a space program and are the 2nd or 3rd largest economy in the world. I don't think we have to worry about conflicts with them too much. The two countries are too tied together in trade. The benefits to the development of China will be the new technologies - electronic and biomedical - that will come. Historically, China invented paper, the compass, gunpowder...Think about all the innovations that Japan has brought about. I think that the development of China and India will assist in the further advancement of civilization.

Because we are exploitative hipocrites. China is communist and we know that those people are making peanuts. Yet we still trade with them because it is CHEAP. We help the Chinese to uphold their communist government and cheap labor. Now, personally I don't have a problem with communism as a form of government if they aren't hurting the people. But it is hypocritical because for 50 years we have had an embargo on CUBA because it is communist and up to this year refused to have anything to do with them. So why is it okay to do business with China and not with Cuba? This mentality of business only looking at the bottom line (choosing China regardless of their politics but because they have the cheapest labor/products) is the same mentality for why we have illegal immigrants hired by American businesses in the USA. They don't care if they are breaking the law they just want the cheapest worker so that they can make the most money. I think businesses should do business in Mexico (and some do) even if it does cost more. Now Mexico is a mess with the drug cartels, but had we bought more from Mexico, even if it costed more, rather than China, we might not have 20 million illegal immigrants from Mexico living here in the US. Many of them might have had a better job in Mexico because of increased exports to the USA and some American factories or joint Mexican/American factories in Mexico.
